Wuhan, abbreviated as "Han", also known as Jiangcheng, is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hubei Province, the provincial capital, a sub-provincial city, a national central city, a mega-city, a central city in central China as determined by the State Council, a national important industrial base, a science and education base and a comprehensive transportation hub, and the residence of the organs of the Joint Logistics and Security Forces of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA). In 1950, Wuhan City was changed to be led by the South Central Military and Political Committee, which was stationed in Hankou, and in 1952, Wuhan City was led by the South Central Administrative Committee and was its residence, and in 1954, Wuhan City was changed to be the capital city of Hubei Province.

Wuhan is one of the first cities in China to open up to the outside world along the river, and is the city of choice for foreign investment in central China, with Hong Kong capital accounting for the largest share of all foreign investment. Wuhan is the city with the highest amount of French investment in China, accounting for one third of all French investment in China. The Chinese regional headquarters of the world's top 500 companies, such as Belgium's Anheuser-Busch InBev and Germany's Beiersdorf, are located in Wuhan, and the U.S. Verizon Telecom and Germany's Bosch have set up their Chinese regional headquarters in Wuhan. Wuhan is one of the cities that have the three elements of financial market, financial institutions and financial products at the same time, is the location of the People's Bank of China Wuhan Branch, the only inter-provincial branch of the People's Bank of China in the central region (with jurisdiction over Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces), and is the only legal over-the-counter (OTC) market other than the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange. --It is also the first pilot city in China to expand the capacity of the New Third Board, the only legal over-the-counter market other than the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange.
